Te Tomokanga ki te Pō – The Gateway to the Night
Come down to Silo Park and see Te Tomokanga ki te Pō – The Gateway to the Night by Graham Tipene (Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Hauā, Ngāti Manu) and Angus Muir Design. This incredible mahi toi (artwork) is a neon waharoa (gateway) twenty-six feet tall.
The waka (canoes) on either side of the waharoa represent the harbour; the two internal pou represent male and female; and the two hands and the bottom are the tupuna (ancestor) Tumutumuwhenua, reaching through the earth. The centre pou is Whatu (Whātua) Kai Marie, a tupuna wahine (female ancestor) of Ngāti Whātua. The nine feathers of Te Kāhu Pōkere above represent Te Iwa o Matariki (the nine stars of Matariki).
