Matariki ki Arataki 2022

Matariki ki Arataki 2022 heralds the indigenous new year with a series of lectures.

Session 1 is a talk by Dr Kelly Tikao, ‘The Rejuvenation of Ngāi Tahu Birthing Knowledge and Practices’. Dr Tikao (Waitaha, Kāti Māmoe, Kāi Tahu) is a Māori researcher, nurse, māmā and self-described creative dabbler. (Suitable for: Pakeke 18+ years)

Session 2 is a songwriting/compositional session with local rangatahi Rehua and Nikau. The aim is to walk through the steps of creating a song from scratch. (Suitable for: Rangatahi 13-17 years)

Session 3 is a demonstration of taonga puoro and a guided bush walk. The demonstration runs for one hour, then (weather dependent) take a one-hour hīkoi through the nature trail with Riki Bennett. Please bring warm waterproof clothing for hīkoi. (Suitable for: All ages)

Session 4 Is a harakeke / flax workshop by Mairangi Matariki, who will be showing her passion and love for harakeke with you. You will learn how to make a mobile from natural, indigenous, multi-functional happy harakeke. (Suitable for: Tamariki 6+ years)
