Make a wish to Hiwa-i-te-rangi

Following her 2021 exhibition Hiwa-i-te-rangi, Penny Howard recreates an installation of her whai (string game) in her signature red thread in the Homestead Galleries. You are invited to write your wish, hope, aspiration or karakia (invocation) for Matariki on the back of one of the wishbones held in the kono (basket) and tie it to the whai. At the conclusion of the festival, we will host a dawn ceremony during the time when Matariki is visible in the sky, where we will burn all the wishes gathered and send them up to Hiwa for the new year.
