He Ira Roa, He Ira Kanorau
He Ira Roa, He Ira Kanorau is an art exhibition by Heidi Brickell (Te Hika o Pāpāuma ki Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Rongomaiwahine, Ngāi Rangitāne and Ngāti Apakura) in collaboration with local tamariki. Brickell’s practice explores mātauranga Māori as a fluid system of knowledge to make personalised meaning of the present. Working with a Tāmaki Makaurau-based kura, Brickell used painting and collage to create an installation that explores whakapapa through string-based symbols. The collaged cluster, made up of artworks by individual students, positions each personal exploration of whakapapa within a larger map, demonstrating our connections to whenua, ira tangata, pūrākau – and each other.
