Waiata Maumahara

In 2019, students from Te Wharekura o Hoani Waititi Marae composed a waiata tira (choral song) in celebration of Matariki. For Matariki Festival 2021, all Aucklanders are invited to learn the waiata – lyrics are below or you can watch the video on Facebook. Come together at Ahi Kaa and sing along with the students as they perform the waiata.

Te Pae o Hikurangi lyrics:
Me he whetū tārake nō Matariki
Ka maharatia koutou
Hoki wairua mai ki ō uri
Ki ō mahuetanga iho
E noho nei i te rohe
O te Pae o Hikurangi e
Te waonui o Tiriwā te tupua
Nō Te Kawerau a Maki e
Kōrihi:
Hoki wairua mai - ki a mātou
Ūhia mai rā ko te aroha
Kia whātui ai rā
Hei whānau kotahi
Ki te rohe o te Uru e
Kotuinga:
Hei whānau kotahi, hei whānau piri
Ki ngā tohu o te aroha
Ko te Pae o Hikurangi
Te kāinga manaaki
I a tātou katoa
Kōrihi:
Hoki wairua mai - ki a mātou
Ūhia mai rā ko te aroha
Kia whātui ai rā
Hei whānau kotahi
Ki te rohe o te Uru e
O te Uru e

You who have become stars of Matariki
Will always be remembered
Return to us, your descendants
Those who remain in this realm
Those who live within the boundaries
Of Te Pae o Hikurangi
In the realm of the great Tiriwā
Of Te Kawerau a Maki
Return to us
Shower us with your love
So we may be bound
As one family
Living together in the West
As one family living closely
Within the bounds of love
The mountain range
Is the home that embraces
Everyone entirely
Return to us
Shower us with your love
So we may be bound
As one family
Living together in the West
In the West
