Hikohiko te Uira

Through the experience of lockdown and the challenges of the pandemic, the rangatahi (youth) of Ngā Rangatahi Toa created and composed their very own haka. Hikohiko te Uira references a well-known East Coast haka, describing flashes of lightning showing its power and beauty during a storm. Hikohiko te Uira reminds us that flashes of strength and beauty can be found in even the harshest of environments, and that lightning dances with more intensity during the biggest storms.

Our rangatahi weathered the storm of the pandemic, but it took resilience, strength and flexibility. Regardless of the challenges they faced, this haka proves there is beauty, strength and love in even the biggest storms.
