Rangona – Sentience

In this exhibition, artists explore and develop the theme of Matariki through contemporary painting, installation, carving and sculpture that celebrates our environment. During Matariki, the relationship between Ranginui (sky ather), Papatūānuku (earth mother), whenua (land), maunga (mountains) and whetū (stars) is at its most visible. Matariki speaks of and honours the enduring nature of this relationship, in an otherwise fragile world. The number of maunga in the surrounding landscape highlights this relationship; they are the meeting point of Papatūānuku and Ranginui, emphasise the life within nature, cradle the stars and nurture the flora and fauna.

Including artists Joanne Barrett, Heidi Brickell, Natanahira Te Pona, Jermaine Reihana and Ruth Woodbury. Also featuring work by Ralph Hotere and David Trubridge
