Bernadette Papa (Ngati Whatua Orakei) Kairaranga (local weaver) demonstrates the
traditional methods and uses of harakeke (NZ flax).

The film programme for Matariki 2008 features mahi raranga (weaving) and includes
a selection of historic footage on the weaving of harakeke (NZ fl ax) into items
of use and decoration. This screening features footage of some of New Zealand's
best known and respected weavers. A commentary will be provided by Rewi Spraggon,
Kaiwhakarite - Maori projects offi cer, Waitakere City Council, during the silent
footage.

Riki Bennett (Ngati Pikiao, Te Arawa, and Ngati Porou) speaks on traditional
uses of plants by Maori. His exhibits include various food gathering
traps, nets and materials that, in the past, Maori would have used in their daily
lives. He will also demonstrate Taonga Puoro (traditional flutes).

The traditional art of raranga (weaving) will be the focus of Matariki archive film
screenings to be held in Nga Tumanako wharenui at Hoani Waititi Marae. The film
selections will highlight harvesting, preparation and uses from the different tribal
areas around the country. The New Zealand Film Archive and Waitakere City Council
will host this event. A light supper will be available in the dining-room.

Ngati Whatua o Orakei are showing three fi lms made by indigenous film-makers in
their ancestral meeting house, Tumutumu Whenua.

Day 507 by Merata Mita - The only fi lm crew, led by Merata Mita, permitted
in the occupied area of Auckland's Bastion Point by Ngati Whatua of Orakei documents
the 507th day when the protestors were forcibly removed by the police and military
forces.

The Neglected Miracle by Barry Barclay - A feature length documentary
dealing with questions about who is responsible for crop plant genetic
resources, the basis of the world's food supplies. Sequences shot in Peru,
Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Netherlands, Italy, France, Australia and New Zealand are
included in the film.

Hotu Painu by Pita Turei - The effects of French Nuclear Testing in the South
Pacific on the inhabitants of this so-called paradise.

Matariki-Seven Sisters exhibition is a celebration in recognition of
Matariki and the coming together of seven contemporary Maori women artists. It
is through their artistic interpretations of Maori cultural aspects that we can
