More information
Celebrate Matariki as people have done for hundreds of years – fly a kite! Kite flying has a highly symbolic connection to Matariki, with kites seen as connectors between the heavens and earth. This year the skies above Orakei will be full of giant kites, in a sight reminiscent of days gone by. The large brightly coloured kites will be seen for miles around, dancing in the winds that sweep over the Waitemata foreshores. A day out for the family, it’s a great chance to try your hand at the art of traditional Maori kite making or make a whetu marama – star and enjoy Maori games and stories.
